What is Value based education?

Value based education encompasses embodiment of the values that are required for an all-round development of the personality of a child so that he gains insight of how to face the challenges of the real world.

This positive enforcement of values is a threefold process that includes:

  1. Character Development: This is done by etching the basic values of honesty, resilience, truthfulness, respect and compassion. The students as a result become more respectful towards their parents, teachers and peers. 
    Strong character helps children stay grounded. Even when they face challenges, they learn to stay honest, calm, and respectful. This also improves discipline and reduces negative behaviour like bullying or disrespect.

  2. Personality Development: Shaping a well-rounded personality is essential for the growth of the students. Students learn to handle each situation with maturity and take intelligent and responsible decisions. 
    A well-developed personality helps children communicate better and build confidence. They learn to express their thoughts clearly, work in teams, and handle public speaking or social situations without fear.

  3. Spiritual Development: This helps in developing a sound mind and more positive attitude towards life. Students learn to fight stress and depression and learn to handle difficult situations in life with ease. Spiritual development does not mean religion it means developing inner peace and self-awareness. It helps children stay positive, grateful, and emotionally balanced during stressful times.

Values and Global Education

Major Periods of Value Development

According to sociologist Morris Massey, there are three major periods of a student’s life in which the values are developed. They include:
  1. The Imprint period: This is up to the age of 7 and during this age the child is like a sponge who assimilates and absorbs everything good or bad presented to him. Thus, he believes much of what is told by parents and teachers as true. That is why parents and teachers should be careful about the language they use, the behaviour they show, and even the content children watch. At this stage, children learn more by observing than by listening.

  2. The Modelling Period: This stage lasts from 8-13 years of age and in this period, the child is most influenced by people around him and is likely to model or imitate their behaviour. The importance of a teacher or a parent arises the most in this stage. During this age, children copy confidence, discipline, and attitude from adults. If they see respectful behaviour at home and school, they adopt it naturally. If they see anger and disrespect, they learn that too.

  3. The Socialization Period: This stage occurs when a child reaches the age of 13-21. This is when a child gets influenced by his peers and wants to get away from all the previous influences and programs. This is the period in which he turns to people like him. Media influence is the maximum at this stage. At this stage, children need guidance without strict control. Open communication, trust, and healthy friendships are very important so teenagers don’t get influenced in the wrong direction.

Methodologies Adopted for Value Education in schools

Values are an integral part of the ongoing process of education throughout the student’s life. It commences at the earliest stage and continues till the student blooms into a full grown individual mature enough to take charge of his life and career.

Schools play an important role because they provide real-life situations where values can be practiced daily. From classroom discipline to teamwork activities, children learn values by doing—not just by reading.

    Children notice even small things how a teacher speaks, listens, handles mistakes, or treats others. When teachers behave calmly and respectfully, students automatically learn to do the same.

  2. Behavioural Conditioning: Assimilation and practice of basic moral values is done by reading and listening of good stories and literature, discussions and other value based activities.     Stories, classroom discussions, and real examples help children understand values in an interesting way. When children connect values with real situations, they remember them more easily.

  3. Appreciation and Positive Reinforcement: This is a very effective tool for encouraging positive outcome and promotion of good behaviour. Students want to be appreciated from their teacher and peers and such motivation can indelibly bind these values with their personality. Students also learn to be accountable for their decisions and behaviour.

    Appreciation helps children repeat good behaviour. Even simple praise like “Well done for being honest” or “Thank you for helping your friend” motivates children to act responsibly again.

  4. Inclusion of Value based Activities: Various extracurricular activities based on values like debates, story writing and telling, celebration of National Anthem and song, drama, poetry recitation etc. cement the student’s belief in these principles and shape his personality.

    These activities also improve communication skills and confidence. When students take part in debates, drama, or poetry, they learn discipline, teamwork, respect, and the courage to express themselves.
