UNLOCKING YOUR CHILD FULL POTENTIAL

UNLOCKING YOUR CHILD FULL POTENTIAL

Think Tank

All children can learn, develop and do remarkable things. However, sometimes, children restrain themselves due to their belief that they are either talented or not talented. Research by psychologist Carol Dweck shows that children with a growth mindset, i.e., the belief that they can improve with effort, are more likely to take on challenges, keep going even when things get tough, and reach their goals. They are also more likely to feel confident and enjoy the learning process since they do not see mistakes as failures but as opportunities and possibilities to improve.

A growth mindset is not something children are born with; instead, it can be encouraged both at home and at school. By helping children develop this mindset, we can guide them toward unlocking their full potential. Here are five simple ways to do it.

1. Encourage Children to Embrace Challenges

Children with a growth mindset see challenges as chances to learn. Facing challenges actually helps them grow.

When your child is having difficulty in a subject like math, you should make them feel that it is a challenge that they need to solve/overcome and not a sign that they are not good at it. You can encourage them to seek assistance and explore new methods of learning. Children who accept challenges are patient, persistent and confident.

2. Praise Effort, Not Just Talent

When a child does well, it is common for a parent or teacher to say, ’’You are so smart!’’ However, this may lead them to rely too much on talent and avoid trying things that feel difficult. Sarvottam International School encourages parents and teachers to praise effort and hard work because this teaches children that success comes from trying, practicing and learning from their mistakes.

For example, instead of saying:

“You got an A! You’re so smart!”

Try saying:

“I am proud of how hard you worked to prepare for this test.”

This little modification makes children realize that being talented is not the only thing that matters, effort matters too. When children understand that working hard is important, they are more likely to keep trying, even when something is difficult.

3. Help Children Learn From Their Mistakes

Children with a fixed mindset often equate mistakes with not being smart enough. But children with a growth mindset see those mistakes as opportunities to learn.

When your child makes a mistake, talk about it calmly and positively:

What can we learn from this?

What could you do differently next time?

This approach teaches children problem-solving and also helps them understand that nobody gets everything right the first time. Over time, they become less afraid of making mistakes and more willing to try new things.

4. Help Children Set Realistic Goals

When children have specific goals, it gives them something to focus on and motivates them to achieve those goals. Goals should be realistic neither too easy nor too difficult, which might cause the child to become frustrated. At Sarvottam International School, we guide children to set goals that are challenging but achievable.

For example, if a child wants to improve reading, the steps could be:

Read one new book every week.
Discuss the story with a parent or teacher.
Write down new words and practice them.

5. Be a Role Model

Children learn a lot by watching adults. If they see parents or teachers embracing challenges, learning from mistakes, and celebrating effort, they are more likely to do the same and repeat it. Even though it may be hard to admit mistakes, showing children that everyone can improve helps them understand that growth is lifelong.

Why a Growth Mindset Matters

Children who develop a growth mindset tend to:

● Take on challenges instead of avoiding them.
● Keep trying even after failing.
● Feel more confident in their abilities.
● Enjoy learning as well as trying new things.
● Develop better problem-solving skills.

At Sarvottam International School, a CBSE school in Sector 10 Noida Extension, we focus not only on academics but also on nurturing the right mindset for success. By praising effort, encouraging challenges, helping children learn from mistakes, and guiding them to set realistic goals, we help students unlock their full potential. When children know that abilities can grow through practice and hard work, they become more confident, more motivated, and ready to face anything life throws at them.
