BEING KIND TO EVERYONE BIG OR SMALL

Think Tank

What does kindness really mean?

If you look it up in a dictionary, kindness is defined as being friendly, generous, and considerate. But kindness is so much more than that. It’s not just a word or a definition. It’s something you feel, something you do, and most importantly, something you share.

Did you know that when children aged 9 to 11 were asked to do three kind acts every week for just four weeks, they ended up gaining an average of 1.6 new friends? That’s more than twice the number made by kids who simply wrote about places they visited.

At Sarvottam International School, Noida, we believe that kindness should be part of our everyday lives. It isn’t just about saying “please” and “thank you” (though those are important!). Real kindness is about how we treat everyone, whether they’re older, younger, a close friend, or someone we’ve just met.

Kindness Is More Than Just Being Nice

Being “nice” is often the easy route; it’s polite and safe. But kindness? That’s going deeper. Kindness means choosing to help someone even when you’re tired or when no one is watching. It’s reaching out a hand, not because you have to, but because you want to.

Imagine a younger student drops all their books in the hallway. Stopping to help, even if you’re rushing to class, is kindness. It might seem small, but those moments often mean the most. At Sarvottam, we want kindness to be part of who we are, not just something we do.

Why Kindness to Everyone Matters

Everyone you meet—whether they’re tall or small, shy or outgoing—deserves kindness. Sometimes people are going through things we don’t see. A smile, a friendly word, or a helping hand can go a long way.

And you know what the amazing part is? When you’re kind, good things come back to you. Students who are kind are more likely to be happier, more accepted by their peers, and even less likely to be bullied. This ripple effect also strengthens our entire school community.

Simple Ways to Bring Kindness to Life

Here are some easy, everyday ways to practice kindness at school:

1.  Be kind to yourself first. Caring for your own feelings and being gentle with yourself is what allows you to spread kindness more freely. When you love yourself, others see it too and learn from your example.

2.  Show it by doing! Hold open a classroom door, say “good morning” with a smile, or help a friend who’s confused about homework. These small actions add up and make a big difference.

3.  Say thank you and notice kind acts. Notice someone doing something good? Let them know. It might be as simple as saying, “That was so helpful, thank you!” When goodwill is acknowledged, people are more likely to continue doing so.

4.  Do nice things without expecting anything back. Kindness is its own reward. Whether you’re lending your stationery or volunteering to help clean up, do it simply because it feels right.

5.  Practice kindness often. Kindness gets easier the more you practice it. Try to do something kind every day, such as giving a compliment, cheering up someone who’s sad, or helping clean your classroom.

6Create a culture of kindness at school. Have a ’’Kindness Wall’’ where students list thoughtful acts they saw, or start a Kindness Club where students implement small, helpful projects. Programs like these will create a caring school culture.

A Real Example at Our School

Let’s say you have a classmate who is new and nervous. You could:

Welcome them by name. They’ll feel included with even a simple, “Hi, I’m (Name), I’m so glad you joined our class!”
Offer to sit with them at lunch. It’s a nice way of making them feel comfortable.
Help them find their way around the school.

All these examples are kindness in action, and they might just make all the difference in someone’s school experience.

Conclusion: Kindness Is Our Superpower

At Sarvottam International School in Noida, kindness isn’t just a rule; it’s a culture. Whether big or small, every act of kindness is important. It helps build a happier, safer, more welcoming school for everyone. When we choose kindness, we choose to make our school and our world a better place.
Let’s all choose kindness every day. Be kind to everyone, no matter if they’re big, small, or anyone in between.
