BENEFITS OF MUSIC AND DANCE IN EARLY EDUCATION

Think Tank

Young children are like little explorers. They are curious, they are active, and they are primed to learn. Their brains are rapidly growing, and everything they go through in these early years will be the basis for how they think and feel and relate to others.

At Sarvottam International School, we believe that learning must be fun, creative, and full of movement. One of the best ways to support young children’s development is through music and dance. These enjoyable activities do more than entertain; they support children’s growth physically, emotionally, socially, and cognitively.
Let’s look at how music and movement can make a big difference in a child’s early education.

1. Physical Development and Motor Skills

When children clap, jump, wiggle, or dance to music, they are developing their gross motor skills, which are the skills that enable them to move and balance their bodies.  These movements improve children’s coordination, body control, and overall level of fitness.

Simple activities like:

● Dancing to a beat
● Marching with a group
● Clapping hands to a song

...can help children learn to move with purpose and balance. Playing musical instruments like drums or bells also improves fine motor skills, like hand and finger movement, which are important for writing and other daily tasks.

At Sarvottam, we include these fun activities regularly in our classrooms to support active learning.

2. Language and Communication Skills

Music is an excellent way to help children learn new words and develop their speech. By singing songs and reciting rhymes, children learn:
Vocabulary, Pronunciation, Rhythm and tone, Listening and memory.

Children instinctively like to repeat songs that they enjoy. That repetition helps to strengthen language development without even realizing they’re learning.

Music also enables children to express themselves. They learn to speak clearly, listen to others, and communicate confidently.

3. Emotional Expression and Well-being

Children have a lot of feelings but do not always know how to communicate them. Music and movement provide a safe, enjoyable, and fun way for them to express those emotions.

● A happy song can improve their mood
● A lullaby can help soothe them
● Dancing and moving can help them relieve stress or fuel their energy

Group music activities also create a sense of togetherness. Children feel connected to their peers, which builds a sense of belonging and emotional security.

4. Social Skills and Teamwork

Music and dance often involve group activities. Whether it’s singing in a circle or playing instruments together, children learn to:

● Take turns
● Share space
● Listen to each other
● Work as a team

These are vital social skills that help children in developing friendships and learning how to collaborate. Dancing in pairs or singing in small groups is a way of helping children feel included and appreciated.

In our classrooms, we intentionally plan group music sessions in order to promote interaction, collaboration and support for each other.

5. Brain Development and Thinking Skills

A meta‑analysis of studies involving children aged 3-6 found that regular music training has a considerable positive impact on inhibitory control (the ability to resist impulses), working memory, and cognitive flexibility.

These brain skills help children stay focused in class, follow instructions, and adapt to new situations.

Dance movements, especially those that follow steps or patterns, also help with spatial awareness and sequencing, skills needed in maths, science, and problem-solving.

Fun Ways To Use Music and Dance

Here are some of the simple yet powerful ways to bring music and dance into preschool classrooms:

Engaging in music-related games

Games such as ’’Freeze Dance’’ or ’’Simon Says’’ help young children learn to follow directions (important for both social and academic purposes) while fostering balance and coordination.

Singing Songs and Rhymes

Singing nursery rhymes or children’s songs makes language learning fun and easy, and helps develop rhythm.

Musical Storytime

Adding music and movement to storytime brings stories to life and keeps children actively involved in learning.

Conclusion

At Sarvottam International School, we believe that the best learning occurs when children are active, happy, and engaged.

These joyful activities help children grow in every way: physically, emotionally, socially, and mentally. They learn important life skills while clapping, singing, jumping, and smiling.

So, let the music play and the little feet dance because at Sarvottam, we’re growing through rhythm, every day.
