FUN WAYS TO BUILD READING HABITS IN KIDS

FUN WAYS TO BUILD READING HABITS IN KIDS

15-10-2025

Think Tank

How will children learn to love reading if they are never used to it on a regular basis? Reading is one of the most beneficial habits a child can develop. It builds language, improves focus, and opens up a world of imagination. However, developing this habit takes time and effort from both parents and teachers.

A study by the UCL Institute of Education found that teens who read for enjoyment every day know approximately 26% more words than those who don’t read at all in their free time. Also, teenagers who grow up in homes with lots of books know about 42% more words than peers whose homes have few books.

At Sarvottam International School, we believe the love for reading should grow with the child, not fade away. That’s why we encourage fun, simple ways to make reading a part of everyday life at home and at school.

Start Early with Read-Alouds and Picture Books

It is not necessary that children should know how to read before they begin to enjoy books. Reading to small children, including toddlers makes them feel connected with the stories.

● Choose picture books with lots of colors and fun characters.
● Read it out loud using different voices to make the story come alive.
● Show them how to hold a book, turn the pages one at a time, and follow the words with your finger.

Your child won’t understand every word but will enjoy the rhythm, the sounds, and you being there. This is part of gaining early interest in reading.

Create a Cozy Reading Space at Home

If children have a comfortable space to read, they’re more likely to do it.

● Set up a small reading nook in your home with some cushions, blankets and a lot of books.
● Choose age-appropriate books like fairy tales, comics, adventure stories, and even joke books.
● When reading together, keep distractions away such as phones and television.

The space doesn’t have to be big but it should feel special.

Visit the Library Often

Although we have access to e-books and videos, visiting a real library still brings a special excitement.

● Give your child the freedom to explore and select books independently.
● Attend library story hours or book clubs, if available.
● Watching other kids reading builds confidence and shows that reading is a normal, fun activity.

Going to the library can become a fun family routine and it’s completely free.

Make Reading More Interactive

Reading shouldn’t feel like a test; rather, it should feel like a conversation. Involve your child during storytime.

● Ask them questions like “What do you think is going to happen next?”
● Take a moment to explain a new word or phrase.
● Let your child guess the ending or even make up their own.
● Act out funny scenes using your voice and facial expressions.

These small actions turn reading into a shared experience, not just a quiet activity.

Turn Reading into a Game

Though reading may not seem like play, it can be turned into something just as fun.

● Make a ’’Reading Bingo’’ sheet with exciting tasks like ’’Read a book with an animal’’ or ’’Read and finish a book in one week.’’
● Hide books around the house and create a scavenger hunt to find them.
● Rate the books you have read together and put stars on a ’’Reading Wall.’’
● Play ’’Guess the Ending’’ games or take turns creating new endings.

This kind of fun keeps them coming back for more.

Celebrate Small Wins

Children may not always finish a long book, but their efforts still matter. Celebrate progress even the small steps.

● Keep a reading chart on the wall or fridge.
● Write down the number of books read or new words learned.
● Let your child present a “mini book review” or even write their own story.
● Give positive feedback, even if they make mistakes.

Criticism can make kids nervous, but praise builds confidence. Focus on the habit, not perfection.

Make Bedtime Stories a Daily Routine

Even older children enjoy bedtime stories, though they may not say it. Ending the day with a book helps calm the mind and strengthens the parent-child bond.

● Let your child choose the book even if it’s the same one again.
● Take turns reading a page or a character.
● After the story, discuss your favorite part or ask what might happen next.

This small habit adds comfort and joy to the end of the day and builds a lifelong love of reading over time.

Final Thought

Building a reading habit every day is not that complicated. It does not have to include expensive books or strict rules. All you really need is time, interest, and a little creativity.

At Sarvottam International School, we support all parents and teachers in helping children discover the joy of books after all reading is not just about learning but also about growing minds and happy hearts.
