THE IMPORTANCE OF HANDWASHING

Think Tank

Washing your hands, whether with soap and water or hand sanitizer, may seem like a small everyday act, but it’s one of the most effective ways to protect your health.

At Sarvottam International School, students learn that staying healthy is just as important as learning new things. One simple way to stay healthy is by washing hands regularly. It helps stop germs and keeps everyone feeling well.

Clean hands prevent the spread of germs that can make you or others sick. It’s a simple practice, but it makes a tremendous difference, especially in schools, families, and other places where we spend a lot of time together.

In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), handwashing can protect:
1 in 3 young children from getting sick with diarrhoea
1 in 5 young children from respiratory infections like pneumonia
That’s a big reason to keep hands clean!

When Should We Wash Our Hands?

At Sarvottam International School, we encourage all students to make handwashing a regular habit. It helps stop the spread of germs and keeps everyone healthier.

It’s especially important to wash your hands:
Before eating or cooking
After using the bathroom
After cleaning around the house or classroom
After touching animals or pets
Before and after visiting or caring for someone who is sick
After sneezing, coughing, or blowing your nose
After playing outside, gardening, or walking the dog

By washing hands at the right times, we reduce the chances of getting sick and of spreading germs to others.

How Do Germs Spread?

Germs are tiny organisms that can make people sick. We can’t see them, but they are found on many things we touch every day. Germs spread through:

Touching dirty hands
Eating food or drinking water that isn’t clean
Breathing in air after someone coughs or sneezes
Touching surfaces that have germs on them
Coming into contact with a sick person’s body fluids

Once germs are on your hands, they can easily enter your body by touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. And if one person gets sick, it often spreads quickly to others, especially in homes and schools.

How Do Clean Hands Help?

Good handwashing is the first line of defence against many illnesses. Clean hands help prevent:

The common cold
The flu
Diarrhoea
Bronchiolitis
Meningitis
Hepatitis A
And many other infections

Washing hands helps keep students healthy and reduces absences from school. It also helps protect those who might get seriously ill, such as younger siblings, grandparents, or anyone with a weaker immune system.

How Can We Encourage Children to Wash Their Hands?

Teaching children to wash their hands at an early age builds a healthy habit that lasts. Try making handwashing fun and part of their daily routine:

Use fun songs (like singing “Happy Birthday” twice) to help them wash for 20 seconds
Choose soaps that foam, change colour, or have a pleasant smell
Let children count out loud while they wash
Connect handwashing with enjoyable moments, like snack time or after arts and crafts

The more fun it is, the more likely children will remember to do it!

What Are the Steps to Proper Handwashing?

Here’s how to properly wash your hands with soap and water:

1. Turn on the water and wet your hands.
2. Add soap.
3. Rub your hands together (don’t forget the backs, fingers, and under your nails!).
4. Scrub for at least 20 seconds.
5. Rinse your hands well under running water.
6. Dry your hands using a clean paper towel or cloth.
7. Use the towel to turn off the tap to avoid recontamination of your hands.

When soap and water are unavailable, hand sanitizer can be a great alternative.

Let’s Make Handwashing a Habit

One of the simplest ways to stay healthy is to include handwashing in your daily routine. Many illnesses can be avoided with just a few seconds of soap and water.

Sarvottam International School encourages students to build good habits that will lead to a healthier lifestyle. Washing your hands may appear to be a simple task, but it helps keep you, your classmates, your family, and everyone around you healthy.

Let’s all remember:
Clean hands = fewer sick days, more learning, and happier days for everyone!
