EFFECTIVE STUDY STRATEGIES EVERY STUDENT SHOULD KNOW

Think Tank

When it comes to studying, many students think that longer hours lead to better grades. However, simply spending hours with textbooks does not always result in effective learning. If a child is distracted, tired, or overwhelmed, those lengthy study sessions can become unproductive. Instead of focusing on how much time they spend studying, it’s more important to focus on how they study.
At Sarvottam International School, we encourage students to study smarter, not longer.

Here are some practical tips to help students learn more effectively:

1. Use Real-Life Examples to Make Concepts Easier to Understand

Abstract ideas can often be challenging for students. However, when these ideas are related to something they already know, they become much easier to comprehend. For example, while learning about acids in science, your child might struggle with the concept. But if it’s related to a familiar experience, such as the sour taste of lemons, they’re more likely to understand and remember it. Using real-life examples makes learning more relatable and enjoyable.

2. Set Clear and Achievable Goals

Goal setting is important, but the goals must be clear and realistic. If your child sets vague goals like “I need to study everything,” they may feel overwhelmed and discouraged. Instead, help them break their study time into smaller, manageable tasks. For instance, “I will study this chapter today” or “I will learn how to solve these math problems by the end of the hour.” These smaller goals keep them focused and give a sense of accomplishment. Clear goals make studying feel less burdensome and more attainable.

3. Don’t Just Reread: Engage with the Material

Many students think that repeatedly reading their notes is the best way to study. But that’s not always effective. Simply rereading may not help them recall the information better. Instead, they should engage actively with the material.

Encourage your child to test their knowledge. After reading a chapter, they can close the book and try to recall the key points. Alternatively, they can make flashcards and quiz themselves on important terms and concepts. This method—called retrieval practice—has been proven to enhance memory. Actively recalling information helps embed it more deeply than passive reading.

4. Break Study Time into Short Sessions

Long, continuous study sessions can lead to fatigue and reduced concentration. It’s more effective to study in short, focused intervals. One of the most successful techniques is the Pomodoro Technique: study for 25 minutes, then take a 5-minute break. After four such sessions, take a longer break of 15–30 minutes.

This strategy keeps the brain refreshed and improves focus. With consistent practice, your child will be able to maintain concentration for longer periods without feeling drained. It’s about working with the brain, not against it.

5. Use Visual Aids to Remember Information

Visual memory often proves stronger than verbal memory. Encourage your child to use visual aids like diagrams, charts, and illustrations, especially in subjects like science or geography. For example, drawing a diagram of the digestive system or the life cycle of a plant can reinforce understanding.

If the textbook doesn’t offer visuals, they can create their own. The act of drawing or organizing information visually helps reinforce learning and makes it easier to recall later.

6. (Repeated Heading. Already Covered Above)

At Sarvottam International School, we believe that learning isn’t just about the number of hours a student spends with their books, it’s about how effectively they use that time. By adopting these smart study strategies, your child can study more efficiently, reduce stress, and achieve better results. With the right approach, studying can become not just manageable, but also a rewarding and enjoyable experience.
