Think Tank

Physical Education (PE) should not only be seen as a break from academics. It is an important part of a child’s learning experience. Research indicates that around 81 percent of adolescents worldwide are not active enough. (UNESCO, 2019). This means many children are missing out on the benefits of regular physical activity, not just for their health, but also for their personal development.

At Sarvottam International School, we believe that sports and physical education are integral to the overall growth of a child. Our sports curriculum is designed not only to improve fitness but also to develop life skills that students can use throughout their lives.

Why Physical Education Matters

1. Better Health and Fitness

The most obvious benefit of sports is improved physical health. Nowadays, children spend most of their hours sitting: at a desk, in front of computers, doing homework, and in class. This lack of movement creates a potential for health-related issues such as obesity, weak muscles, and poor posture.

Our structured PE program ensures that students get regular exercise. Activities like running, team games, and fitness training help students:

●  Build stronger muscles and bones
●  Improve their stamina
●  Have good posture and flexibility
●  Reduce the risk of diseases like diabetes and heart conditions

2. Improved Mental and Emotional Health

Participating in sports also helps promote mental health. Physical activity helps the body release endorphins, which are also referred to as ’’happy hormones.’’ All of these hormones improve mood and reduce stress and anxiety. Students who play sports regularly are more positive, focused, and emotionally stable.

Sports also help students deal with emotions better. Whether it’s handling a win with humility or learning from a loss, students become emotionally stronger and more mature.

3. Learning Teamwork and Cooperation

Sports teaches one of the most important life skills - teamwork. In team sports, students will need to work together to achieve a common goal. They learn to share, listen, support others, and communicate cohesively.

Research has suggested that students who play team sports can have a 24% increase in social and communication skills. Social and communication skills are not only important on the field, but also in real life; at school, at home, and in the workplace.

4. Discipline and Time Management

Participating in sports regularly shows students the importance of rules, practice, and routine. Athletes know that they are required to adhere to certain rules, be on time, and work hard to improve. These habits create self-discipline and help with time management, which will help facilitate success in the academic classroom.

When students learn how to balance studies with sports, they also become more organized and responsible. These qualities help them in all areas of life.

5. Building Confidence and Leadership Skills

When students participate in sports and succeed, whether by scoring a goal, winning a race, or just performing better, it builds their self-confidence. They learn to trust their abilities , set goals , and work towards them.

Sports also give students a chance to take on leadership roles. Leading  a team, guiding younger players, or organizing  warm-up sessions helps them develop leadership qualities and responsibility.

6. Better Academic Performance

It is a common misconception that students, who participate in sports, do poorly in school; to the contrary, students who engage in sports generally do better in school. Physical activity improves blood flow to the brain, which helps students think more clearly and concentrate better in class.

7. Promoting Inclusivity and Respect for Diversity
